Information about Culture and Conservation of Orchids

The Laelia anceps project of the Orchid Society of Santa Barbara
with Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens

One of the missions of OSSB is to educate the public about orchids. In this spirit, the society began an ongoing project several years ago to mount orchids on trees at the zoo. This project was the brainchild of Paul Gripp and then OSSB president Pat Siordia, who envisioned orchids in bloom in the trees that would draw the attention and appreciation of zoo patrons.

Read and print out Culture Fact Sheets created by the American Orchid Society.
For some orchids, there are 2 culture sheets.  The first one is designed to assist the beginner, and the second one is intended for the more advanced grower.  These documents require that the Adobe Acrobat Reader be installed on your computer.
It can be downloaded and quickly installed from Adobe

The American Orchid Society has created and posted an enormous online encyclopedia of orchid culture information.
The encyclopedia lists thousands of orchids, their culture, and native environmental conditions.   It spells out phonetically the name of each orchid and it includes sound bytes to help you learn to pronounce their names.

Conservation:  Preservation and protection of orchids and their habitats throughout the world are among the primary goals of the AOS and their affiliated societies.  Al Svoboda wrote an article about conservation for the AOS.  With the permission of the AOS we have posted a copy of that information.
